Text description provided by the architects. Wa is a traditional gray-colored roof tile, widely used in China in the past and still available today. Like other masonry material, Wa typically expresses heaviness. As architects, we desire a new interpretation of this ancient material and make it light. In order to achieve this goal, we have taken out the bottom tiles while keeping the top tiles, connected the tiles with steel cables, and created a pointed arch. By so doing, we are able to reduce the weight of Wa and to let light coming down from the roof. The structure appears to be light and heavy as well as contemporary and traditional all at the same time, maintaining a structure integrity and clarity to the entire design.
